Navi Failed!

I sold my son a 2005 TSX Navi. He has installed quite a bit of aftermarket electronics, including 1200 watt speakers. Recently, the Navi quit working and he took it to the dealership. It needs a new driver to the tune of $4200! Could the aftermarket installs caused the navi to fail prematurely? It never gave me any problems.

The bass might make it cause occasional errors due to the vibrations. Cant see it causing permanent damage though.

If it doesnt load at all, look at the disk to see if its scratched first.

4200 to repair the navi? What? Full navi conversion only costs around 2k.

Could it? possibly
Did it? doubt it

That being said does it not load? any image on the screen? Personally if the navigation part just didn't work i'd spend $200 and get a handheld GPS unit and save the cash. My factory navi is ok at best and leaves alot to be desired.

Let them tell you precisely which unit needs to be replaced, and source a used unit and upgrade the disc while you're at it.
Or send the unit to Alpine for a repair.

Yes, it is technically "possible" the excessive vibration caused premature failure, but then again the unit is designed to deal with the cold of winter/heat of summer as well as extreme vibration. Who knows??

I see others recommended getting an A/M unit for the dash. I don't know its just knowing you have a feature that came with the car not functioning properly that keeps me from recommending the A/M route. You probably want it work as it suppose to.

If you want to see a truly worthless NAV system, then buy a 04 E class Mercedes. It's like operating a commodore computer.

+1. Bought my car with defective Navi. Dealer gave me a great deal because of it, thinking the car would need hundreds/thousands of $ to fix navi. Sent the receiver to Alpine. 3 weeks, $158, and it works perfectly now.

You'll have to describe exactly what the problem is/let us know what you see.

If you see nothing on the screen at all, that could be a big problem. Or it may be as simple as a dirty disk. It is pretty common afaik for the 04/05 system to fail. You'll find lots of posts if you do a google search.

I had a problem where the system wouldn't read the disk anymore. I sent it to Alpine, and $158 later it was fixed. Actually, that price seems to be what many others have reported as well. You just have to send the DVD reader (in the trunk).

Just so you know, the processing/DVD reading happens in the trunk unit. The screen up front is only for display. Like I said, if you don't see anything on the screen, that could be a problem.

$4200? I think that's for the entire system. F'ing dealership. Thank God for sites like this.
