Comptech Icebox

I know this has been discussed here and in other forums, but I can't seem to find it in the search...

What makes the CT Icebox less prone to hydrolocking than the other intakes available? Is it just the mere height of the inlet/horn? Most of the other CAIs run much lower, right?

Correct. When you use a CAI, the actual filter location is much lower. When using any sort of airbox (stock or aftermarket) the air is funneled into the box where it is then filtered, much less prone to suck up water or anything else. Personally, I prefer either the stock airbox with a new filter (green or K&N) or some sort of short ram with a heat shield.

I agree, and that is also why you will probably see a little less gain with the Icebox. It doesn't generate as much air suction at the filter as a CAI is capable of, but it's a nice improvement over stock with none of the hydrolock risks, and also much easier to access the filter for cleaning/changing then a CAI......

Do you not have the directions? Search for "Comptech Icebox" and you should get some help on our forums. Thanks.

The airhorn for the Comptech still seems to stick down a bit. How high is the stock location (relative to the alternatives)? I'm wondering if you are increasing the risk even by going with the Comptech.

Alternatively, how about when you remove the resonator (of course, you can replace the airfilter)? On my previous car, the stock "snorkel" inlet was way up at the top of the fender, and if you removed the resonator, it actually lowered the intake point by maybe a few inches. (Of course, if/when I get around to yanking the resonator out, I will probably see for myself, but I guess I'm still trying to decide if it's worth it to go with an aftermarket intake, or if just removing the resonator is good enough.)
