Sythentic Oil/ Oil Life gauge help

A couple of months ago i switched over to syn. oil at around 6800 miles. I am now at 9900 miles and the oil life gauge is at 15%. Does this sound right to anyone because i thought syn oil was suppose to last at least 5000 miles or something like that. I never really push my car that hard and its mostly drives to work and home. I havent really checked how the oil looks physically but based on the gauge is this correct?

depends on what syn. oil though check the mileage on the one your using. i use royal purple and i get 5000 miles. also i know of some Mobil oils that do like 15k i believe.

I would guess the real question would be how does the guage work? Does it work based on TIME? Based on particles in oil? or both?

Thats what i've been wondering. I did a search on the forum and theres a thread that said that its based on the actual oil life itself. But even after switching to synthetic its still going by the 3000 mile reading. Can anyone that has changed to synthetic oil tell me if the oil life gauge has gone according to the mileage of the synthetic oil that you used?

What does "Oil Life" indicator measure?
It measures- hot-weather operation, short trips, stop and go,highway driving. Basically eliminates the need of figuring out what type of service schedule you should follow by doing it for you.

So does this mean that the indicator is correct and that my oil only has 15% life left? I just checked the dip stick and the oil on it doesnt even look all that dark.

refer to the maintenace section for details. The oil life is purly based on usage & does not monitor the oil itself as in other makes like MB. Their life is 9k to 12k on factory installed Mobil1 10w-40syn.

IranBT is an unknown soldier, or on the road to either parallels.

regardless of how harsh you drive your car, as long as you're not losing oil(burn or leak), it's pretty safe to say that a decent synthetic oil(Mobil 1) will last you at least 5000 miles no matter what the oil life indicator is saying.

There could be exceptions like a bad engine, but very rarely.

I sent my Mobil1 oil out to a testing lab when I had a RSX in the past & it was still good at 9k. It sounds like you did not reset the 'oil life' indicator. I put in Mobil1 at 6500 m when it read -10% & now at 11k it reads 40%. I plan changes at 10k with Mobil1.
