Idle D - N - D
Auto tranny
=========
I was told it's recommended to go from D to N when idle (for example when waiting at a STOP sign) and then back to D when continue. Do you guys think this is better for auto tranny or is it better to stay in D and have a brake on?
Reason I'm asking is here in Europe auto trannies are still big taboo and you get different opinions.
Thanks.

I would think that it would have a negative effect on your tranny if you switched gears everytime you stop. I think it would wear out the tranny faster and I personally see no point in doing that but thats just me...

It's OK...just be reasonable, meaning don't go crazy and shift to N all the time the car is not moving.

I actually do shift into N at stop lights, main reason at least for me being is that the engine idles higher in Neutral, and since I installed aftermarket headers there is a slight rattle when im sitting there in drive

Car now days are engineered to handle prolong periods of idling while in gear at a light. My old American car would need to go to neutral to rev the engine because my A/C wouldn’t cool as much at a stop compared to my Hondas/Acuras I now drive. I don’t think there would be any advantage or disadvantage to shifting in/out of Neutral at a stop.
I only shift to neutral (or place in park) when stopped a train crossing. I prefer to keep the car in gear every other time because I feel safer if something happens and I need to move in a hurry.

doesn't really make a difference, but it actually is better for your engine, since when in Neutral "pressure" is relieved on both your engine and tranny. When you idle in Drive its like your engine is "driving in to a wall" but while in Neutral your engine is free to idle with no resistance (i.e. your braking) ALTHOUGH i don't recommend it because its not a safe thing to do driving wise. you can cause an accident that way just off shear clumsiness or it slowing down you reaction time. (hard to explain =/ but you can feel it when you do it)
