changing catalytic converters

i know a bunch of people have changed their stock converter to an aftermarket to improve airflow, but are there any sort of legal reprecussions in doing this if it's done strictly for performance instead of the legal reasons for changing it (missing, inspection says to replace, damaged)?

just curious.

It depends on your States/Provinces.

In Ontario (Canada), you are legal to change the catalytic converters IF the stock one fail. But as long as you pass the smog & visual test, you will be fine, most HFC will pass, not testpipe tho.
