Headers, CAI > No exhaust = no problem?
Hello fellow TSXer's My question today is this.
If I have Injen CAI, Comptech Headers but no exhaust, will their be a bottleneck effect causing my performance upgrades to be basically nullified.
Do I have to get exhaust in order to fully increase exhaust flows, or will the CAI and Header work just as good?
Any advice is helpful. Thank you in advance!

mathmaticly yes.. bigger exhaust more flow more power.. do you have to get an exhaust? not if you dont want to.. youre not gonna see a huge increase. but as i said youre helping your exaust flow by getting something bigger..
besides lets boil it down.. you know you wanna get an exhaust anyway its called the MOD BUG, you are just prolonging on when =)

The stock exhaust actually flows quite well. Most people get an exhaust for added looks and sound. It will free up a few extra HP at most. If you've got the extra money I'd say go for it, you will not regret it.

yup, our stock exhaust works great. adding a header and not replacing the rest is like buying a cat-back but no header...
you can do custom from stock to 2 1/4 or 2 1/2 piping.
cheaper than spend 500 to a grand to gain 5 HP. spend a grand on cams and valve train and youll be set

what year is your tsx? the 06+ have better airflow that the 04/05, but still probably not as ideal as an aftermarket exhaust or your setup.
btw, i noticed you have an AT with the comptech header. do you have the dreaded comptech rattle/vibration?

No rattling problem here on the automatic. And yes, I do have the mod bug. And my TSX is an 04. By the way, the reason why I ask is because I don't want exhaust. I've always driven stick shift cars/motorcycles and made fun of those with AT w/ exhaust. It just sounds funny to me. muaaaahhhbohhh. That's what it sounds like. I do want the power upgrades from stock to modified.
Thanks yall!
Anyone in San Diego wanna do a meet?

When I got my Greddy Evo 2 installed, I noticed a big difference during mid-range RPM. It felt a lot smoother and less constrictive.

This is true. I could see my RPM's rise and fall quicker.

I'm in SD and im down! I heard there's a meet at fusion every tuesday but its any car... Some guy posted on this website that he goes with his TSX sometimes and I was trying to go there with other TSX's... Let me know if you want to roll over there... And also, im not sure how a CT header feels (Tried to install it yesterday but failed due to the bolts not coming off!!!) but I switched from injen CAI to ghetto icebox and the icebox is definitely better due to having some power to yank the RPMS up to VTEC instead of the CAI only pushing out power after 5k ish... Just my .02...

Ultimately you are not going to get max power without an exhaust, but a high flow cat and NST pullies are going to get you better bang for the buck before an exhaust will.
Also, the exhaust adds a sound and style element to the car, which is something you won't get with the other mods. So there is more than one reason to get an exhaust.
Just a reminder, there is only 3 more days on our WS2 special!

ive got an exhaust and i have a auto, but it doesnt drone
TBH i dont even hear it at crusing speed. but it will roar if i give it some gas... so what im tryna say is.. listen to a few exhausts and see what fits you best? I got the greddy sp2 since its one of the quietest ones for the tsx, and i'm happy with it. the intake is louder than my exhaust

Im all for the budget stuff... I took my stock exhaust and deleted the Pre-muffler and the Resonator, it free'd up some flow. It was enough that in conjunction with my DIY intake that my wife (knows nothing of cars) noticed that the car pulled better under hard acceleration. I have sound clips posted of both on their respective threads.
I think that unless you are doing something spectacular under the hood, the factory exhaust tube is more than enough flow, if you dont get an exhaust now at least just do what i have done to release a little more back pressure and you will be fine. $100 versus $800 - $1000, It is well worth a shot at least. And i dont think you will be displeased, it isnt loud enough to be really noticable while normal driving unless you are consciously thinking about it , so you shouldnt get the terrible auto exhaust sound you dont want (my accord used to be auto... i know exactly what you mean). Especially since you already have the header, that will only make them all work better.
Exhaust:
http://www.tsxclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=28924
Intake:
http://www.tsxclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=30908
Between the two they make just enough sound to hear under normal acceleration, they are pretty audible under hard acceleration, but absolutely no droning while cruzing. I have a T1R test pipe on the way too, I will post up another clip with that once it comes in and i get it installed. (thanks Marcus)
Hope this helps, and maybe saves you a few bucks in the process...
-Mike
