Need New Motor, Please Help!!!
I have an 04 TSX with almost 95,000 miles. I bought it used and have reason to believe that the previous owner auto crossed it. The problem I am having now is that it burns a quart of oil every 1,500-2,000 miles.
How much would it be, and would it be worth it to put a re-man/new motor in it. The car drives fine with the exception of vtec not kicking in. I just came home for spring break and got 33 mpg on a 350 mile trip.
I'm thinking of just selling it and getting a Ridgeline, but i want to see what it would take to go this route first. I would have my local shop do the labor.

you sure its the motor thats gone and not say leaking or burning oil? maybe valve seals are bad or other things? sounds like u might just have to swap the head and call it a day. i would seriously diagnose the issue before u jump to conclusions and a good mechanic will get u straight

I think I read at least 2 threads like this one and they all involved 04 TSX's. I want to avoid any claims about 04 TSX's, but both of them had very similar issues.... burning oil, overheating. They had to have their engines replaced rather than fixed tho

I want to figure out what exactly the problem is and wanted some advise. I guess a new motor would be the extreme. I just don't know how to check things like the head and wanted some input before i go to a mechanic.

Fix the VTEC and drive it - oil is a lot cheaper than a rebuilt engine.

Lol sure, but idk why the vtec doesn't kick in. I test drove a 08 civic si and the vtec on it was like hitting boost in my dads rx-7, well sort of. My buddy had an 07 TL-S with an apexi afc-neo and when he sets vtec to engage at 3500 you don't feel it. the higher the engagement the more you feel. Maybe mine just kicks in early.
You're right about oil being cheaper, but i want to make sure there isn't a more serious underlying problem. I go to school 6 hours away from home so if something goes wrong I'm kind of on my own.

well VTEC is normally operated off your speed and rpm in each gear you are in. besides checking valves if you got that smoke coming out the engine you should do a compression test and check your piston rings. if they are bad on the oil scraper ring or compression ring i know oil can seep through the cylinder and burn up in the combustion process as well. lmk what you find out this is interesting for me.

Your vtec might not be working because of possible low oil pressure.
You could be leaking from your valve seals.

well the vtec in the civic and the vtec in the tsx dont feel like anything similar lol. the tsx is gradual and not as torquey or powerful. have the car brought to a mechanic and have a pressure test done on the 4 cylinders. than they will go to a manual and see if it is in spec. than maybe do a tune up. If no oil leaks are found or ur burning oil than obviously ur car is fine. Is your car an auto or manual? as for useing oil it is possible because the seals might need replaceing with the high mileage. Im sure its something u can live with if u keep on top of it til ur budget permits. As for the VTEC- again the 2.0 civic si and the 2.4 tsx motors are like night and day. U know anyone else with a tsx? compare ur car to another tsx. civic doesnt compare.

Where in TX do you live? I'm in New Braunfels and could take a look at the VTEC issue ...
