Intake Resonator w/PIC

Last weekend I removed the stock resonator and boy was it a lot of piping.

Basically what I did was, I first used the jack that comes with the car and jacked up the front driver's side. Removed driver's side wheel. then I removed the screws and clips under the front bumper and on the fender liner. Don't take them all off but only the ones needed to open it up a little. then you take out the battery (which is easy). There is 1 bolt that is really hard to get to, but in order to get to it, you need to take off the hose piece that comes down from the engine bay. the 2 pieces are connected somewhat like lego blocks. They fit together well so you need to take a flat head and pry them. Lastly, you stick your hand in the gap between the bumper and resonator and unscrew the bolt.

I didn't realize until a friend told me that from the stock intake, there is a tube going down into the resonator box, which is about the size of those soda boxes that hold like 18 or 20 cans. anyway, after hitting the resonator box, there is another tube going up towards the engine bay and it stops about where the battery is. So what this means is, the stock intake system pulls air from INSIDE the engine bay. I don't think a lot of people know this.

Conclusion
1. Intake resonator is freakin' huge (see pic above)
2. Stock intake pulls air from inside the engine bay
3. Resonator and tubes can be taken out without removing front bumper
4. I predict that those of us with SRI's will benefit a lot from taking out the resonator because it opens up a path of cold air into where the SRI is.

Good work man

Another benefit is that you've dropped some useless weight from the car as well. That plastic crap is actually pretty heavy.

If you have some more free time, try to fabricate some sort of heatshield/ducting system, perhaps you'll gain more performance, and still have the safety of a SRI.

Correct me if I am wrong (I have yet to take this off my car) but the pipe that connects to the air box can be installed and actually cut to suck in air more like a CAI. In fact looking at your piping it really should be easy to do.

Yea, it's been done. It's like a ghetto CAI though so not really sure the point of doing it besides saving money. I think there was a DIY about it somewhere on here or azine. If you really want that I would just buy a CAI personally to make it look better overall. .02

Nice write up tekneek and yea it's totally dead weight and a lot heavier than one would suspect. The air sucked in is from the engine bay. It goes from there into the resonator box and then the airbox. Not sure if it gets minute outside air from the location of it but most of it, I imagine, is air from the bay. I removed my resonator a while ago thinking I would get the Icebox but I couldn't see the difference btwn that and simply removing the resonator. At least nothing that would be super noticeable on a DD so I saved $150 bucks for now lol.

I removed mine when I removed the bumper to mess with my fog lights and it was definitely easier, to me at least, than taking off the tire and not removing the bumper. Overall, took me about 15-20 mins to find all the bolts that needed to be removed and then take out all the pieces and put my car back together again.

I removed mine a few days ago and left K&N filter in the box. Car definitely pulled harder. I put a paper filter in it though. Its quieter and provides better filtration, despite what salesman at Autozone or Kragen tell u. Maybe lost a couple of ponies there. I also second the idea of a heatshield. Somebody needs to make 1 for TSX.

PS its not THAT heavy as many people describe it. Maybe 15 LBS.

I agree, K&N filters aren't a good filtration device, but that is probably why it adds whatever little bit of power since more air gets through. Overall, I prefer good ol' regular filters for the car since it's my DD anyways.

Wasn't that one guy trying to make a heatshield for the TSX? The one who made the battery tie down. Not sure whatever happened to him since he kinda disappeared after that haha.

Yea, it's not like 100 lbs or anything, but for it to be plastic and pretty useless. 15lbs is a lot to get rid of when it comes to gas mileage in the long run. Only thing it does, afaik, is that it doesn't make the engine as loud when accelerating and stop some crap from being sucked in there but that's hard enough as is.

Yea, I am sick of oil being brown every 2k miles when I buy M1 filters and expensive synthetic oil. I would rather keep oil and engine clean and long lasting than keep 2-4 extra HP. Its worth it to me.

I really wanted that dude to make a heatshield and a few others KIND OF supported me, but then he said it was too difficult, he needed a model bla bla bla... The plan failed

I am not sure if 15 LBS will do much to either acceleration or MPG, but if lose that much on the wheels and a few more MPG on pulleys, that sure helps. I would also swap those heavy stock seats for sporty seats. Stock ones weigh like 50-60 LBS if not more. I am serious.

i'd say its around 15lb, but i removed it for air flow reasons. its useless and gets in the way to have it in there if you have an intake. The way i see it is, if it has a use, then i don't mind it being "heavy."

The sole purpose for the intake resonator is to kill sound and it comes with a price.

Like our car seats may be heavy, but they come with the memory and heat feature that lightweight seats don't have.

Also, you have better access to the fog light and it gives you a place to mount an HID kit if you ever wanna get HID fogs.

I've pulled out all that junk without removing the front bumper or the wheel or the battery. You just have to have the right tools and the correct angles to pull it all out.
