If you downshift properly, you won't hurt your transmission any more than when downshifting when accelerating. You will definitely save your brakes, however.

From what SJ is saying, it sounds like if you have the AT, there's no downside whatsoever in using the downshift on the SS to save the brakes.
Indeed all you'll do is.......save the brakes.
Of course most of the time we'd rather just BRAKE, but that's another story.
