If you downshift properly, you won't hurt your transmission any more than when downshifting when accelerating. You will definitely save your brakes, however.

Neutral drops will definitely hurt a transmission.
From what SJ is saying, it sounds like if you have the AT, there's no downside whatsoever in using the downshift on the SS to save the brakes.

Indeed all you'll do is.......save the brakes.

Of course most of the time we'd rather just BRAKE, but that's another story.

The one downside I can think of is that downshifting with SS will be a bit rougher since you cannot match the RPMs to the transmission speed.

Apart from brakes, I personally have seen noticeable MPG difference. Plus it gives me a semi-pleasure of driving MT. Also, in wet / ice /snow conditions one should break as least as possible as the chances of vehicle getting skid is pretty high.

SJ, are you saying downshifting with SS will make sifting rougher (which it does) or will it make the transmission rougher? I think its the first one but just want to confirm.

just another question.... when you guys downshift w/ SS mode (AT)... do you guys tap the brake when you downshift?? or you guys just do it?? Cuz i did it before, and i feel a jerk~

Yes, downshifting will be rougher with SS when compared to a true MT because with MT you can do rev matching.

You can help minimize this by downshifting at lower RPMs (slowing down before downshifting).
