Its best if you use the recommended gas type, but you can use 87.
Edit: You probably wont notice any thing if you use 87/89 once or twice....but if you keep using those, you will notice your engine will "ping" a lot more (bad for the engine in the long run).

The TSX's engine is designed for 91 octane. With this octane, you get great fuel economy and performance.
The TSX can run on 87 octane. The car will just adjust itself (ie: advance/retard the timing). With this low octane, you no longer get performance out of the car, and the fuel economy drops. So for one tank of 91 octane, you'll have to have more than 1 tank of 87 octane to get the same mileage. Thus, you'll be spending more money in the end.
So the choice of octane is yours. If you want to go to the gas station more often and have no performance/fun, use 87. If you want everything that Acura promised you, go with their recommendation of 91 octane.
91 octane is only 16 cents more than the other octane here. It's like $5 extra each fill-up.

91 is 6 cents more than 87 now in mtl and on thursdays, I think Ultramar and some other have 3 cents off... which makes the difference even more irrelevent.

There have been several threads like this before. I'm just gonna say it's like tires. All cars can drive on almost any kind of tire however if you want the best performance and handling outa that car then you need to go with with the best tire made for that car and it's charcteristics. It's the same way with the gas. Will it run on lower stuff yes but if you want all of what the motor is supposed to do use what is recomended for it.

I disagree with this analogy.
You're arguing wants versus needs.
Running on "bad" tires will not directly cause physical damage to the car itself.
Running on low octane could lead to knock and ping, which could damage the engine.
Right idea, poor analogy

i def wouldn't believe the dealership on that one... if the manual said 91, i'm gonna put in 91... i have a feeling that the manufacturers have a slightly better understanding of the car than the dealer does... i mean they do make the damn thing after all...
for ppl that never want to put in premium.. what business do you have owning a luxury car anyways? IMO u should be driving a civic instead...

Why did they want you to do that? Is this some sort of requirement? Did they pay for your first tank of gas? Is that why?

I'm so used to putting 87 (only had my tsx 8 days now..but 1200 miles) that like i put 91 octane twice, and accidently put 87 twice but didnt realize it till it was done. Stupid me.
However, hopefully i'll start remembering...i want to use 91 damnit! Just need to remember to hit the right button.

If one uses less than 91 then when pushed the timing will be retarded & one will get less power out of the engine & worse gas milage since the knock sensor will prevent "knocking" & thus damage to the engine.
I upgraded from 87 to 89 in my 95 Integra LX & received better gas milage thus it came out to be the same cost in the end.
That is why I will use 89 & 93 but never 87 in my TSX.

Easy math
15,000 mi per year / 25 MPG = 600 gal of fuel per year
600 X $0.10 more per gal for 91 octane =
$60 more per year to buy the correct fuel.
I use 93 octane. It is only $0.20 more than the 87 octane.
More math:
$4.00 coffee from Starbucks X 5 days/week x 52 weeks/year =
$1040 in coffee
My 2 Cents
Thanks
