Looking to buy a 2004 TSX auto
Hello,
I'm interested in buying a 2004 model tsx with auto transmission. The car has about 40,000 miles. What are the common problems and recalls associated with this model year and transmission? Any and all advice is greatly appreciated!

If it's for sale at a good price, I would highly recommend it. Don't be scared off by the 2004 TSX horror stories on the internet. I recently purchased one with 90k miles and it runs just fine. I took it to the Acura dealer and everything checks out just fine. I'm betting that most 2004's are trouble free. It's just the few who have had problems with their's that's making it seem like all 2004's are ticking time bombs.

I have a 2004 at 109k miles and it still runs like new. Common issues are warping brake rotors, failure of the center console display lights, headlamp assembly fogging, vibration of the door panel trim. None of these are that serious and the dealer fixes them as they are factory documented issues with TSB's. If the car has a well documented service history and passes a PPI, go for it

My 2004
I bought my 2004 model in like November of 2004, so the 1st generation TSX had already been out for like 1.5 years & therefore most of the bugs must have been worked out by then. I have had no major problems in 5 years of ownership ... the most annoying thing was the center console lid/tray thing not working right & I had to take it in twice but I consider that very minor in the grand scheme of things.
My car is now 1 year past the 4 year warranty & have not had to get anything fixed yet *knock on wood*

It's a hit or miss with problems, just like any car. Look at the sticker in the drivers door, it will tell you when it was made, late 04 is probably your best bet.
If you want to know problems related to the 04 model search in the "Problems and Fixies thread" it will give you all the info and some on 04 models.

The 04 did not have A LOT of problems...
there was an AC compressor issue, and an issue on the center console displays...the axles don't seem confined to just 04.
And don't forget the 04 was originally sold as far back as mid 03. So look at the production date. It may just be that the earlier "04"s had the issues. Has anyone looked at that?

thanks for the replies everybody... I read about the a/c compressor issue. How common is this problem? It seems like a pricey fix if it ever happens. Also with the dash light problem, do you have to replace the whole headunit to fix this or is there another way to fix it? thanks.

My car has a build date of 7/03 so I think I have one of the oldest cars here. I have not had an issue with my AC. It has never been recharged and still blows cold in 100 degree humid mid-Atlantic summers. My center console did fail and the dealer replaced the entire unit. I think that is really the only fix as a defective mother board is the weak point

Ever notice how its the people with 04's that defend it, and the people without that attack it? 04's will normally have more problems just because they are older.... hence the 04 rather than the much glorified 06... Either way TSX's are awesome cars and extremely reliable.

My 04 just passed 80k
I advise you to drop the 1500 and get a 30-35k extended warranty since 04s arent certified used anymore.
As for the ac deal, mine whines alot at idle-2k rpm, thought it was the serpentine belt at first, but noticed all things calm if I turn it off. Still blows hot and cold on the dual setting just fine. But likesay, when it goes I got my warranty for a few years

So true, so very true. IMO, I've always thought the 04-05's looked better anyways.
