I suggest start with something simple like replacing the trunk lights with cold cathode bulbs or LEDs. Once you get more comfortable with this stuff, you might get more ambitious and tackle footwell lights or ambient lighting.

You'll have to learn how to remove trim pieces, etc. under the steering wheel but most of it is straight forward.

Here's something to get you started:
DIY Guide: Installing Custom Cold Cathode Trunk Lights

hey i have an 09 vbp and i wanted to increase the brightness of the footwell lights. i went to autozone and bought 2 blue led clusters for like 15 bucks and wired them to a car charger and i plug it into my outlet in the center console. i ran the wires under my seat and up into the console so they arent really noticable. they light up the footwells really good and i like how they came out.
