ps: the way I look at this, revving the crap out of it once a day is better than doing nothing at all, right?

i kinda want to keep the car as long as i can and not blow up the engine.
but yes, you can shift down from D-2-1.

I have the same problem on my new 2009 TSX too. I picked it up on Oct 2nd and after around 4 weeks I had noticed that rattling sound (or a knocking/pinging noise) coming from the front. After my hearing on roads over and over again more than 1 week, I think this rattle could be tachometer related but not speedometer related.
I can hear the sound when I am accelerating and the tachometer reading reaches between 2000-2500 RPM and that doesn’t matter what my speedometer says in the same time. I would have to listen very carefully to recognize the noise on highway.
I had made a service appointment and am going to bring in my car this Tuesday. See if they will give me the same "gasoline" crap or can figure out what is happening in my car and then fix it.

Let us know what your learn
PHYCS - My 2009 TSX AT has been pinging since I bough it in June this year. I have been playing with all different brands of high-octane gas and still hear the noise at 2,000 - 2,500 RPM as well. I'm near my first oil change mark (6,800 miles), and will be taking it to the dealer for that and to fix this friggin' noise! Knowing your outcome would be helpful.
-Thanks

rattling noise in 09 TSX in Austin, TX
The dealership confirmed the noise after an hour test drive in my car and one less-than-10-mile newly arrived TSX with two experienced mechanics. Yesterday it was raining in Austin and the rattle was much quieter than it used to be. I had no idea if the humidity kept it quieter. Anyways, thank God they did notice the noise after all the effort and time.
The elder mechanic told me that there will be Acura Tech Rep visit them today. He will bring up this issue and see what the answer will be. I did not leave my car with them yesterday because they don’t think it is necessary since the pinging sound can also be heard in the newbie.
The Service Manager and the elder mechanic told me that so far I am the ONLY one feedback to them about this noise and they actually could not find any related info from Acura internal database. Don’t know what else I can do here. Keep my fingers crossed and hope I can hear a resolution soon from them.
Adifranco – I personally don’t think you need to keep filling up your tank with high-octane gasoline even though gas pricing is much lower now. Take your car to the dealership for oil change, ask them about the rattling noise, and see what they will tell you. I bet through this forum you have already learned more than they do. As for now, I would rather turn up my music and try to live with it. Miles Away by Madonna is one of the really good choices. The drums will cover everything…

took my crv back to the dealer end of january this year. they did more so-called "software updates", replaced the knock sensor and added 94 octane gas in my tank.
when i drove the car out of the shop, wow! it feels great and drives great. i was so happy, even sent a thank you letter to the shop. 1 month down the road, it's back. not as bad as before but it still happens. i've tried filling up with 89 octane and 91 octane. the engine seems to like 91. total BS, i'm sick n tired of it. car's been to the shop for 3-4 times. this will totally be my first and last honda for as long as i live. i'm going back to my toyota.
in a way it's comforting to know i'm not the only honda owner with this problem.
i wish you guys goodluck. hope you can get your problems fixed.

if you know anyone with a car w/manual tranny, take it for a drive.
drive up to... say around 40kph, stick it into 5th gear or the highest gear - step on the gas and listen to it ping like crazy. that's what pinging sounds like.
i've talked to two mechanics yesterday that i personally know.
both told me the same thing. a lot of hondas require premium fuel, even though they say they dont. i'm now running 92 octane chevron and pinging is almost gone. i was told to try 94 octane which i will do this week. the last time my car was in the shop, the repair order mentioned adding 94 octane.
quite ridiculous for a brand new crv to ping and require 94 octane gas.

yes but what we are talking about is not just run of the mill engine ping, this doesnt happen on the TSX when you bog the motor in the wrong gear... this appears to only affect the AT models, if there are any manual TSX's experiencing this then we can update this thread but all that I have read so far on 3 other boards is it is mostly the AT models and happens near the top of the shift point in any gear, not when accelerating..

well the compression ration is 11:1... it can depend on where you are living (in terms of meters above or below sea level) and what octane you are using

just an update on this , after altering driving habits to accelerate a bit more forcefully the pinging between gears is noticably less or gone all together, probably because the shifts between gears are faster and dont "float" into gear which is what happens when you are light on the pedal. I dont mean flooring it, but just a bit more authority when driving.
Maybe also this will apply to our Acuras as well

I hear this pinging noise when idling, I have a manual transmission. When i'm accelerating all I can hear is the stock intake sucking in air.. almost like a whine noise.. very hot if you ask me.. At higher gears on the highway I usually run about 3500 -3800 RPMs at all times on the high way in 6th gear, and don't hear pinging at all.
THough when I idle and put my window down I can hear it, or if I pull up to a drive through its rather loud as well. Overall if you stand a foot and a half away from my car you won't know its running though if its idling.

I called Acura today to add my VIN to the growing number of concerns about the "pinging" issue. The Customer care rep said she had others that called about the same issue before and was aware of the issue, and that the more owners that brought this up as a concern the better chance of a resolution. Maybe it will be addressed after the Euro Accord modifications are complete.
It was less than a 5 min call so if you haven't called and would like to here is the number; 1-800-382-2238 option#5
